Application for the AATG/PAD National German Exam Scholarship

Application Requirements:

Eligible students must score at or above the 90th percentile on the Level 2, 3, or 4 National German Exam of the current exam cycle. In order to apply, the student must also:

  • be in high school

  • be of good academic standing (“B” GPA or higher)

  • be between the ages of 15 and 17 for the duration of the program (June-July 2024)

  • be in good physical and mental health

  • either be a US citizen or have permanent resident status in the US, or have primarily lived in the US for at least three years (if you are unsure about your eligibility, please contact veronika@aatg.org before applying)

  • not a holder of German, Austrian, or Swiss citizenship

  • not live in a household in which any daily conversation is conducted in German

  • never have been enrolled in a school in which the language of instruction was German

  • not have visited a German‐speaking country for more than two consecutive weeks since the age of six

  • not have previously won this or similar awards

  • be able to provide documentation of measles vaccination or acquired immunity if chosen as a scholarship recipient

  • be willing to take the Avant STAMP 4S Language Proficiency Test if chosen by their chapter as a chapter nominee, with a proctor, in March 2025  (Required for advancement to the National Selection Round)

Chapter Requirements:

Please note that some chapters may have additional criteria for application. The Chapter Testing Chair will provide details.

Application Deadline:  February 19, 2025 by 11:59 pm Eastern. 

Application Materials:

Students who meet the above requirements should fill out the NGE Scholarship Application Form. Before beginning the form, students should request the name of their AATG chapter and their standard group percentile score from their German teacher.

Note: Students cannot save and return to the application – when started, it must be filled in completely. Students should prepare short responses to the questions listed on the form instructions ahead of time, then apply online.

Teachers should submit a short recommendation form for each eligible student here: NGE Scholarship Teacher Recommendation. Recommendations may be provided by the student's teacher of German or a guidance counselor. Only one recommendation per student is required and will be accepted.

Student applications and teacher recommendations are due February 19, 2025 by 11:59 pm Eastern.
